As a soccer referee, a few folks have asked me what I think of the new Video Assistant Review being used for Major League Soccer games in the United States.
I find it interesting to see the reactions from others.
I find that most folks are looking at VAR with a good dose of confirmation bias to reinforce the views they already held, and things tend to fall into one of two camps:
- Wow! Look at how VAR is showing that referees make mistakes. I told you that they suck!
- Wow! Look at how many times VAR showed something that I didn’t really see in real time. I told you this refereeing thing was hard.
How hard? Depends on the level. English Premier League referees run more than the players and get 99% of the offside decisions correct.
