Wick, a Royal Burgh since 1589, was formerly a Viking stronghold in an area which was Norse in connection through the invasions of these warriors years before.
Probably the most famous of those Norse Princes was Torfinn, cousin to Macbeth and Duncan. His mother was a daughter of crafty Malcolm II. Through Malcolm's dealings, she married the Earl or Jarl of Orkney and Caithness and out of that union Torfinn was born, thus giving her son a claim to the throne of Scotland.
Sources tell us that he was involved in the death of Duncan though, whether personally or through some sort of pact with Macbeth, we will never know for sure. He spent most of his life contending for Sutherland which he claimed, and making life as difficult as possible for the now King Macbeth, and, after Macbeth's death, Malcolm Canmore. As far as we know, he never lost a battle to any of his opponents, and in fact died peacefully in Birsay on the Orkney Isles.

The town developed down through the ages into a major seaport and eventually an important herring fishing centre. Since the decline of the herring industry, whitefish has taken over but not to the same proportions of the former.
Some light industry has become established in the town such as glass blowing and this has become one of the area's success stories. Many thousands of holidaymakers and tourists visit the factory each year
