Shawbost
in the area known as the West Side has much history in and around
the district. The village itself is one of many attractive little places
which line the west coast, but not always on the coast, of the island.
It boasts a swimming pool, sports centre and a folk museum. There's
also a Viking mill which has been restored, adding to the history around
this little village.
At nearby Arnol
there's a museum and visitor centre which is popular, at Carloway
a village restoration scheme and an ancient tower of great historical
value, at Callanish, a heritage centre and our equivalent of
Stonehenge, a stone erection of great significance. This is the second
most important site next to Stonehenge itself.
This is also Harris Tweed country with many homes involved in
the manufacture of that famous cloth.
