Port of Ness
is a very attractive small village on the northern tip of Lewis.
It has a history of Viking origin and the villagers have been renowned
for their seamanship. The small harbour is still used by the local and
visiting boats. The area around is one of intense crofting making it
a thriving community.
The sands around
the area are great for beach activities. Fishing, birdwatching, cycling
and walking are all good on this part of the island.
There are two sites
of ancient stones nearby at Ballantrushal and Shader which
have attracted much attention. At Europie there's an old church
of early christian origin still in use today. At Habost there's
the Ness Heritage Centre and nearby the New Music and
Arts Centre.
