Moray
is now part of Grampian but it was not always that way. At the time of
Macbeth Moray was the most powerful domain
or region in Scotland. The land area then stretched from the west coast
right across Scotland to the eastern seaboard , from the border of Caithness
south to what is now called Angus and Dundee. Because the mormaers or lords of Moray held such power and indeed had a good claim to the throne they always posed a threat to ruler after ruler. To sort this problem domain out it was gradually reduced in size by proportioning off the land to various newcomers not of the traditional Celtic blood. Today Moray is much smaller but the people still retain that sense of independence just as long ago but of course without the bloodletting of the past. It is almost certain that a Roman fleet landed at Forres and most certainly the Vikings landed in the Burghead region. Possibly no other part of the United Kingdom has had so many armies march over it's soil. |

However that's not all there is to Moray for we can boast of some wonderful scenery, beautiful towns and their lovely gardens, terrific salmon and trout rivers, golfcourses, abbeys, castles, a cathedral and of course the whisky. Towns like Elgin, Forres, Lossiemouth, Buckie, Keith, Cullen, Dufftown and Rothes with villages like Tomintoul, Fochabers, Portknockie, Burghead, Hopeman and many more all await the opportunity to show you their wonderful hospitality. Holidaymakers never forget Moray which is why so many come back to settle down in the area thus adding to the culture and business life of the shire. |
