Lochboisdale, main town of South Uist is also the ferry terminal for boats to Oban on the mainland.
The town is typically seaport in style and the main shopping centre of the region.

The place is also the only east sited community of any size on the island as all the other communities are on the west coast.
Fishing and sailing are the main attractions for sports whilst the walks and wildlife are great for the rambling fraternity. Cycling is also another popular method of transport with holidaymakers. Golf is also on hand nearby.

Other places a must for a visit are Loch Druidibeg Nature Reserve, Howmore with it's ancient buildings and graves, Ormacleit Castle home to the chieftain of clan Ranald, Locheynort with it's exciting hillwalking and scenery, Kildonan museum, Milton, the birthplace of Flora MacDonald, Askernish with it's golf course, North Glendale with it's wonderful walks, Polachar with it's mystical standing stone, Ludag, ferry port for Eriskey and Eriskey itself, that island made famous by the film ' Whisky Galore ', the landing site of Charles Edward Stuart on his quest for the throne, and, it's own famous breed of ponies.

The beaches along the west coast are terrific and if you think that you have seen the best you have not seen these. This is a great place for a vacation.

For eats the hotels, restaurants and cafes provide good fayre at reasonable cost.
Hotels, guesthouses, caravan and camping sites are available.

 

 


Travel is by bus, coach or car.
For the tourists from abroad the nearest airports to Lochboisdale are Benbecula with a connection by bus or coach, Glasgow and Inverness both connect with Benbecula by air, and on as above.

Ferries to Lochboisdale run from Oban on the mainland. Glasgow is connected to Oban by rail, bus or coach.
