Kyle of Lochalsh, a beautiful village in an exquisite setting which overlooks the Isle of Skye. This was the main crossing point to the island with two ferries working away day in and day out, until that is, the time they opened the bridge. The ferries are now gone and with them perhaps a little of the romance which I'm sure a lot of people felt, including myself, when making the crossing.

If legend is to believed it was from this area that Flora Macdonald rowed Prince Charlie across these same waters on his flight from the 'Redcoats' and with the ferry one always had a little sense of doing the same when making the crossing. For me the bridge has taken away the magic of that experience but progress must go on.

In Macbeth's time these waters were the ' roadway ' for a bigger threat than redcoats for the sight of the Longboats with the multi coloured single sail must have struck panic into the hearts of the person who would be first to spot them. Of course I write of the mighty Vikings who terrorised these coasts for many years. Most of Scotland's Islands did in fact belong to the Vikings until, that is, the Battle of Largs, when they were finally defeated. The outcome was the return of all Viking domains to Scotland. This was only achieved years after the death of Macbeth.

The village has some fine shops, a swimming pool, a golf course, beautiful gardens and some excellent walks. There's boating and yachting plus some good fishing also.
At nearby Plockton there are also boat trips and a Highland Farm Centre.

Back down the Fort William road a little, Eilean Donan Castle sit proudly out on the water. Turn west at Shiel Bridge and head for the coast to see Bernera Barracks by Glenelg. Not far up the road there's a little ferry service for Skye.
