TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

Jo is the North of Scotland Trainer for Hypnosis-Scotland, the Scottish satellite branch of the UK Academy of Therapeutic Arts and Sciences (incorporating the Washington School of Clinical and Advanced Hypnosis). The UK Academy was founded by Fiona Biddle and Dr Shaun Brookhouse in 2002. The mission of the UK Academy is 'to advance the professional practice of therapeutic arts and sciences through the provision of high quality courses and excellence in the support of our students, members and associates while recognising that the needs of the public who receive the therapeutic service are paramount'.

In 2006 the UK Academy amalgamated the Washington School of Clinical and Advanced Hypnosis as its Hypnotherapy Practitioner Training Division. The Washington School of Clinical and Advanced Hypnosis was founded in 1996 by Sue Washington and Dr Shaun Brookhouse, and has been training successful hypnotherapists ever since.

The UK Academy of Therapeutic Arts and Sciences is accredited by the National Council for Hypnotherapy in the UK and the National Guild of Hypnotists in the USA. The School's main web site can be visited at www.hypno-nlp.org

Hypnosis-Scotland was established in 2002 by John Lawrence to bring this high standard of training to Scotland. It offers training in both the Northern and Central parts of Scotland for both new and experienced hypnotherapists. These include the Diploma in Clinical and Advanced Hypnosis, Practitioner and Master Practitioner courses in Neuro Linguistic Programming, and courses in Meridian Therapies at both Practitioner and Master Practitioner level. For full details of the courses offered please visit www.hypnosis-scotland.com

There are a plethora of hypnotherapy training schools, and it can be hard to make a decision as to which school would best suit you. To listen to Shaun Brookhouse giving advice on how to make that decision please visit the 'Training Available' page at www.hypnosis-scotland.com or the Home page of the UK Academy at www.hypno-nlp.org

The Diploma in Clinical and Advanced Hypnosis (Dip.CAH)

The Diploma course is run part time over one year and has 450 hours of combined classroom tuition (carried out over 10 weekends) and directed independent study. The course is modular, having 11 modules overall. Classroom work is partially theoretical, but also devotes a large proportion of time to practical work to enable students to relate their theoretical knowledge to their practical skills, thus helping them to embark on their new careers with confidence.

The course incorporates the National Guild of Hypnotists (USA) core curriculum, and the Diploma is recognised by several national and international professional associations. It also meets the requirements for the externally-accredited Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), which is awarded jointly by the National Council for Hypnotherapy and the NCFE Awarding Body. This is a Level 4 Vocational Award. On successful completion of the course students will be eligible to use the letters DipCAH and HPD after their name.

In addition to hypnotherapy the course also includes training in Neuro Linguistic Programming, and successful students receive the qualification of Certified NLP Practitioner (PNLP).

Since 2006 the course has also incorporated the syllabuses for specialist certification in anxiety, smoking, and Ericksonian hypnosis. Candidates wishing to receive specialist certification in these subjects will be required to pass optional additional tests. These certifications are awarded by the UK Academy of Therapeutic Arts and Sciences. For further information on the UK Academy, please visit www.ukacademy.org

The next North of Scotland course will start in September 2008. Please visit the Downloads page for a copy of the Prospectus and application form.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and Dr John Grinder of the University of Santa Cruz, California. It began as a model of communication, and a large part of NLP is devoted to helping people to think more positively and to communicate more effectively.

'Neuro', as the name implies, relates to our neurological processes. We all experience our world through our various senses, and this affects our thought processes, sometimes in an adverse way. 'Linguistic' refers to the way we use language to make sense of what is happening and to communicate that experience to others. Finally, 'programming' relates to how we interpret those experiences and use what we have learnt to structure our lives. Sometimes an individual's programming is negative and self-destructive, and NLP aims to help people reframe their experiences and perceptions in order to achieve a more positive and effective outlook.

A term you will often hear in NLP is 'modelling excellence'. Such modelling is perhaps one of the most significant aspects of NLP, and is based on an understanding of how people do things well. The idea of 'modelling excellence' is that if you model the behaviour of somebody who has all the attributes that you are seeking you can learn from them and eventually be as successful as they are.

Another expression that you often hear in NLP is 'the map is not the territory'. This implies that the world we perceive is not the real world but our own unique model that we live in. To put it another way, although several people may experience an identical event, no two will perceive it in precisely the same way. We all know, for example, that an optimist will see a glass as being half full, whilst a pessimist will see that same glass as being half empty. An important part of NLP is helping people change the way they perceive their world, and to see it in a more positive way.

NLP is a powerful technique that often brings about change very quickly. For this reason it is a technique that is popular with both individuals and organisations. Training for the Certified NLP Practitioner Diploma is incorporated into the Dip.CAH curriculum.

Supervision

Supervision is of great benefit to newly-qualified and experienced hypnotherapists alike. It provides a safe, confidential environment in which therapists can discuss their concerns with a suitably qualified and experienced third party, and helps them to develop their practice and meet the challenges presented in an objective way. Jo has qualified as an Accredited Hypnotherapy Supervisor through the National Council for Hypnotherapy. She offers supervision on a face-to-face basis for those living in the North of Scotland, and is also happy to offer telephone and e-mail supervision for those living further afield.

John Lawrence is available for supervision in Central Scotland. He is an Accredited Hypnotherapy Supervisor (NCH), and is also qualified to offer supervision to all complementary therapists. John can be contacted on 01506 830190 or via his web site at www.hypnosis-scotland.com.
