YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Hypnotherapy is both safe and effective. It does not involve the use of any kind of medication and there are no unpleasant side effects. Hypnotherapy can be used alongside most other forms of therapy - it is truly complementary. But please note that it should not be regarded as a substitute to medical examination, diagnosis or treatment, and if you are already taking medication you should continue to do so.

Can anybody be hypnotised?
Most people can be hypnotised - provided they want to be - but nobody can be hypnotised against their will.

But surely hypnotism is about control?

No, far from it. You are in control the whole time, and the hypnotherapist is merely there to help you achieve your goals by making positive suggestions. You can't be made to do anything that goes against your own desires or values. The cinema has a lot to answer for here. Over the years a number of films have been made that portray hypnotists as evil people who use their sinister powers to get their wicked way, 'Svengali' being perhaps the most famous of these. But that sort of thing simply couldn't happen in real life. Stage hypnotism has also done hypnotherapy a great disservice, as those taking part appear to be under the hypnotist's control. However, it should be remembered that people who take part in such shows are there because they want to be, and are happy to go along with the hypnotist's suggestions. It's only entertainment. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, is entirely therapeutic. The aim is to help clients achieve their goals and to make their life more enjoyable.

Will I be unconscious or asleep?

No. In fact you will be amazed at how mentally aware you will feel, although physically you will probably feel wonderfully relaxed. You will be able move if you want to, although you'll probable feel far too relaxed to want to bother. And you can talk whilst in trance too - but don't worry, you can't be made to say anything against your will, and you can even tell lies whilst in trance if you want to. Your secrets are intact!

So what does it feel like?

It varies from person to person. Some people feel very little different from normal, and may even find it hard to believe that they have been hypnotised. Others, as mentioned above, feel very relaxed, and may find that they feel either heavy or light, or that parts of their body have faded away. Others still may experience a lovely 'floaty' feeling, whilst 'visual' people quite often see beautiful waves of colour. It's a very individual experience.

Suppose I get stuck in hypnosis?

Don't worry, that can't happen. I will always bring you out of trance at the end of each session, but if I did not, you would simply come round by yourself whenever you were ready to.

I'm still not sure.

Please ask for a complimentary 30-minute initial consultation. No trance work takes place at these sessions. Their aim is to allow you to discuss your issues in an entirely confidential environment and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about hypnotherapy before committing yourself. There is absolutely no obligation to book any further sessions
