S
ituated in the heart of the Highlands this area oozes history, and is a must for anyone to visit. It has everything that traditional Scotland conjures up in the mind from the eerie moors, the haunting castles, misty monster filled lochs, heather covered glens and sandy beaches interspersed along the Moray coastline. This is Macbeth, Torphinn, Duncan and Malcolm country. Later Wallace, Bruce and a certain Prince Charlie were to trod the same ground. Does this not encourage the enquiring mind to investigate more. For our English cousins Edward Longshanks men, Siward of Northumbria, Cromwell and Cumberland were all here too . Add to that names such as Rob Roy Macgregor, a larger than life hero, or literature's Alan Breck Stuart and Davie Balfour and you must be interested. Whenever you think of the Highlands, romance is never far away, for very few who ever visit fail to fall in love with the place.

T
he main centre is Inverness known to scholars as ' The Capital of the Highlands.' This is where all roads lead in the North for it is the crossroads of the region. They say that Inverness is the fastest growing town in the U.K. and the reason is there for all to see, for it is a bustling, busy and very attractive place. A late night walk along the riverside after an evening out at the theatre or a show is the perfect ending to a special day.

Nairn
is the area's seaside resort, famed from the Victorian times for it's world renowned golf courses, lovely beaches and very impressive hotels. Nairn has a boating marina for those sailing maniacs and some lovely shops for the sailing, golf or fishing widows. I nearly forgot, yes, there's good fishing around too.
Other places well worth considering are Beauly, Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus. Culloden and Cawdor also spring to mind for there is enough history in these villages alone to take up a few days vacation.
