Helmsdale is a nice little seaside town on the east coast above Brora at the point where the railway turns inland up the Strath of Kildonnan on it's way to the north.
This coastline is where famous authors are made, for a certain Dame Barbara Cartland made Helmsdale her second home, and after a few days there you will understand why.

The history of the region is one of the Picts then the Vikings, that breed of men who still raise the blood at the thought of their legendary deeds. The whole region north was under their domination until the twelfth century when it was restored to Scotland by treaty after the Vikings were beaten at the Battle of Largs.
