Key Benefits of Nutritional Therapy

  • Better health - You are what you eat, so you affect your health through diet. A healthier diet will always improve your health and wellbeing
  • Information - Rationale is given for each food and supplement in your individual treatment plan so that you understand what each food or nutrient is doing for you
  • No fad diets - Based upon nutritional science and physiology, you'll never have to 'follow a diet' or question what is really healthy again!
  • Input and Ownership - Your lifestyle and eating preferences are taken into consideration to agree a diet plan to suit you. Each client has input into how therapeutic they would like their treatment plan to be, depending upon how quickly they want results.

What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is the application of nutritional science to promote optimum health and disease prevention. It is the practice of using foods and nutrients to enable our body to 'treat itself', rather than use orthodox drugs, which often treat the symptom rather than the cause.
I provide individual, therapeutic diets to alleviate current health conditions and promote optimum health. Nutritional therapy can be helpful for health conditions such as:

  • Blood sugar control and diabetes
  • Weight loss, exclusion and rotation diets for food allergy/ intolerance
  • Heartburn, indigestion, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and other inflammatory bowel diseases
  • High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels and heart disease
  • Skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and acne
  • Headaches and migraines, insomnia and stress
  • Gynecological problems such as PMT, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, heavy or painful periods and menopause.
  • Recommendations may include guidance on natural detoxification, balancing calorie intake, or the appropriate use of supplementary nutrients.

Why choose nutritional therapy?

Quite simply, you are what you eat! Each cell in the body is formed from the foods eaten, so the quality and range of foods in your diet have a direct effect upon the quality of your skin, mental function, cardiovascular health, hormone levels, and so on.
A qualified nutritional therapist will have undertaken fours years' diploma or degree course in nutritional medicine, studying orthodox medical sciences as well as naturopathic nutrition. Nutritional therapists have a holistic approach to treating illness, so although specific symptoms will be focused upon, it is the underlying causes which are actually treated with nutritional therapy, preventing recurrence of symptoms or disease.

The Nutritional Therapy Consultation

Following a detailed health, medical and dietary history, nutrient deficiencies, metabolic imbalances and nutritional requirements are evaluated. Based upon this information, each client is given an individual diet plan, detailing which foods should be included in the diet, in what amounts they should be eaten, with clear rationale for each element of the treatment plan.

Nutrient supplements may be included for quicker and more effective results. Again, clear rationale is given with each suggested supplement.

Due to the detailed nature of each individual prescription, much work is undertaken after the initial consultation to develop a treatment plan. It is your choice to receive your treatment plan by post, by email or at a further appointment.

A first consultation will take 1 to 1 and a half hours.

The consultation fee includes the following:

  • Food diary analysis
  • 90 minute initial consultation to gain information on health, medical and dietary history
  • Guidelines on the therapeutic diet with full rationale for each food/nutrient
  • Eating plans incorporating all elements of the therapeutic diet given
  • Supplements prescribed and ordered where appropriate
  • Lifestyle advice to help with health conditions - exercise, relaxation, eating habits etc.

After the initial appointment, you are free to call or e-mail with any queries before the next appointment, which is usually 4 - 6 weeks later.

Follow up appointments are typically 45 - 60 minutes.

Nutritional Medicine alongside Orthodox Medication

A nutritional therapist will not insist that you stop taking current medication prescribed by your doctor. However, as your body responds to the nutritional therapy, you may wish to discuss with your doctor the possibility of reducing, or coming off, medicines prescribed by him/her which you no longer require. As some foods and supplements have a similar effect to medicine in the body, the nutritional prescription will always take account of any existing medication you may be taking.

HealthWorks Practitioner - Sara Kirkham Dip. Nut., Dip. Therapeutic Dietetics, BANT

I studied naturopathic nutrition with the British College of Nutritional Therapy (4 years) and completed a BSc in Nutritional Medicine with Thames Valley University (4 years). My experience helping clients to improve their diet and health spans 20 years, much of this centred around weight loss and blood glucose control.

I regularly run 6-week group weight loss courses, and offer shorter consultations for weight loss, still based upon a healthy eating plan.
