John O' Groats, known to be at the ' other end ' of the Kingdom, is perhaps, not quite at the ' end ' for that distinction goes to Dunnet's Head just along the way. However, our village is the accepted place and a popular place it is, for thousands come here each year just to say they'd done it.

In the eighteenth century three brothers, exiles from persecution, came to these parts from Holland, where, with a Royal Letter of Protection, they settled. It was John, of the De Groat threesome, who lent his name to the area.

The landscape is one of great sea cliffs and rolling moors with an abundance of birdlife, plants and insects.

The culture although now very mixed, was once strongly Viking as these fierce men laid claim to all the land south to Ross-shire. Even at this day Viking festivals are still celebrated all around the northern parts of Scotland to the delight of the many participants and onlookers.
As this was originally Pictish land, there are many sites being discovered still, and, there exist many to visit even now.
