Golspie, a picturesque town and seat of the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland lies on the coast not far north of Loch Fleet and the Dornoch Firth.
It sits on a small river called the Golspie Burn and has a very fine sandy beach which runs all the way back to the loch.
The history of the area is probably dominated even to this day by the Highland Clearances, which rid the Highlands of many of its people. The then Duke of Sutherland, who resided at magnificent Dunrobin Castle, instructed his factor to clear the lands to make way for sheep. Little did they know that these events would be to the betterment of the countries to which these poor souls, if they lived, were sent

We only have to look to the Americas to see the influence those Scots brought to the lands which adopted them. Scotland's loss was obviously their gain.
Of course all this is now past and perhaps we should celebrate it as such for the town and surrounding area has much to offer the modern generations.
I have mentioned the wonderful beach but not the fishing of which there's plenty to be had.
Of course there's also golf to challenge the visitor.
There's an Exhibition Centre on local Minerals which is extremely interesting and of course that magnificent Dunrobin Castle and Gardens which is a must for anyone to see.
