Glencoe, that dark mysterious and foreboding place forever holds a place in the hearts of the Highlander, for it was here that an act of infamy was to be played out with the massacre in 1692 of the MacDonalds of Glencoe. Scotland as a country, when looking over it's history, is one of many tragedies and Glencoe is no exception for this was a well planned exercise to rid a piece of land of a family of people deemed a threat to the area by men whose job was to keep the peace.

Now much has been written on the subject as to who gave the order and much has been written as to who denied giving the order but the facts are that these so called leaders of the community did in harmony acquiesce to the deed. The tradition is that it was a Campbell who gave the final order. The very name Campbell raised a dislike from a Macdonald even down to recent days such was the hatred between these Clans for there had been animosity there long before the murders.

Nowadays Glencoe has a popular mountaineering centre and if that's too much for you there's good hillwalking to be done.

The Glencoe Ski Centre is one for the winter months with some great fun to be had.

The National Trust for Scotland has a visitor centre at the Glen, while the Folk Museum in the village itself is also well worth a look.

The village itself is a lovely place and bustles with tourists most of the year. This is a must for any visitor to the Highlands.
