Fort George was built to provide protection for Inverness and area from the seaward and landward access to the town from the east, should the Jacobean element rise up again.

With Fort Augustus to the south and Fort William that bit further again, the area was pretty much covered for any eventuality.
Positioned about eleven miles from Inverness this was well within marching distance should immediate help be needed.

The fortifications themselves were reputed to be the most advanced of their time and they stand today just as they did then. A museum, display barracks and visitor centre with re-enactments of eighteenth century drills can be seen.
This can be a great day out and with Ardersier just along the road as a further stopover, no one should miss out on this opportunity.
