shakespeare - the final years

During his period of greatest success and fame in London, from about 1597 onwards, Shakespeare took care to consolidate his position as a worthy gentleman of his hometown.

He bought New Place, the second largest house in Stratford, and made several other property investments in and around the town. He was permanently based in Stratford after 1608, and lived there until his death on 23rd
April 1616.

Exactly one month before his expiry, he altered and signed his will, which bore the famous bequest to his wife, 'my second best bed with the furniture'.

Many commentators have found this, and the fact that the rest of his estate was left to his daughter Susanna, extraordinarily scandalous, and have suggested a lack of love between the two.

While this is of course possible, it need not be construed so. Widows of the wealthy were automatically, generously, taken care of, and the second-best bed was probably the one the couple shared; the best bed being saved for visitors.

Shakespeare was buried in Holy Trinity church, Stratford-upon-Avon, on 25th Apri11616. Above his tomb is an inscription, said to be composed by Shakespeare himself:

'Good friend for Jesu's sake forbeare To digg the dust encloased heare:
Blese be ye man [that] spares thes stones and curst be he [that] moves my bones
.
