Fort William and Lochaber

Fort William stirs memories of the Jacobites and the 'Red Coats' . The very name 'Fort' raises thoughts of soldiers and guns in the mind . And so it should for it was just one of a line of garrison towns set up to keep these wild highland men in their place.

From the ancient maps it would appear that the then existing settlement was on the border of Moray and Atholl and would have played an important role in the continual disputes between the two. The two great families, Atholl for Duncan and Moray for Macbeth had an almost genetic loathing for one another and many skirmishes took place during these times.
Later on the area was to become a hotbed of Jacobite resistance to the government of the day. The clans of the area mostly sided with the Stuart faction and even to this day can raise strong emotions should the subject be brought up.
