Duffus is
a very small village on the road to the coast near Hopeman and
not far from Burghead, that town much
associated with the vikings and adjacent to that famous school which
was attended by certain members of our Royal Family.
At Duffus a great battle was fought with a viking army which probably landed at Burghead further along the coast. The day resulted in great slaughter and defeat for the intruders.
Before and during the time of Macbeth this region saw many battles and it took a lot of hard marching and fighting to bring some stability to the land. Macbeth achieved this to a certain degree as his reign was mostly peaceful and prosperous for Scotland as a whole and not quite the way Shakespeare depicted it. |

At Hopeman, which lies within a good leisurely walk of Duffus, there's a golf course on the edge of the village for the fanatics who must hit that wee ball no matter where they are. Fishing from the harbour or shore for the angling fraternity is good as Hopeman has a nice harbour and wonderful beach that is also great for children. With Burghead to the west and Lossiemouth to the east, both within easy distance, this is a great area for a holiday. |
