Dingwall, the main town of the area, sits near the head of the Cromarty Firth in an attractive locality.

It was believed to once having a fortress, built as one of a chain, to protect the locality from the Viking incursions which occurred frequently all along the coast.
Macbeth, our hero, is reputed to have been born in Dingwall.

At the time of Macbeth the lands to the north of Dingwall were under contention by both Macbeth, and Torfinn, the Jarl or Earl of Caithness and Orkney, claiming suzerainty over them, thus making the town an important garrison point. Macbeth visited the place quite often during his seventeen-year reign.

The Vikings at that time were very active at sailing into the Scottish Firths, utilising the waterways as long as they could, before landing to raid the areas before them.
Looking at any map of the region one can see immediately the need for a strongly fortified town just where it was sited.
The town itself is a market centre with a large farming community around it. The shopping area is good with a wide variety of outlets.

The railway enjoys a long history in the region, as this is a junction for the north and west coasts of Scotland.

Ben Wyvis, the area's highest mountain, dominates the skyline with its snow-covered peak, which can be seen across the Firth and beyond.
In the surrounding Black Isle district there are many villages with sights and sites to see or stories to tell, places like Marybank, Muir of Ord, Contin, Conon Bridge and on the coast Fortrose, Rosemarkie, Cromarty and a few more.

This is good holiday country with lots of activities such as varied watersports, challenging golf, river and loch fishing, rambling and hillwalking, informative museums, welcoming distilleries, wonderful castles and plenty of free fresh air.

For Eats the Hotels, Restaurants and Cafes provide good food at reasonable cost.
