Glasgow City

Inverclyde

North Lanarkshire

Renfrewshire

South Lanarkshire

The domain known as the Clyde Valley was in Macbeth's time an important region because basically it was the southern most secure area of the new kingdom. With the lands to the south being under constant threat from the Northumbrian and Cumbrian factions who had given refuge to the late King Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, and the possibility of the Vikings from the West Inner Islands and Dunbartonshire becoming more adventurous, Macbeth made sure that this region was well prepared for any eventuality. Any incursions up the West Coast would have to pass over the Clyde at some point and it is testimony to the loyalty of the people of this region that in fact the invasion from the south, when it did happen, did not pass this way.

The region today is broken down in seven council areas, Glasgow City, Inverclyde, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Renfrew and Renfrewshire respectively.
This combination is the industrial heartland of Scotland where the population is at its most dense. This is where the world famous shipyards, steel works, coal mining, engineering, steam locomotives, tobacco and others not mentioned here, brought fame to our nation. Workers from the North and Ireland flocked to the area for the jobs, which, in the early days were in abundance, thus making the region a hive of industry.
Today much of that industrial base has long since gone but the land and its peoples still carry on with the new replacement businesses.

Of course not all the region was or is industrial, for much agriculture and tourism played and still plays a great part with the River Clyde at its centre. One thinks of the Clyde Valley fruit farms and orchards with their wonderful produce and the hardworking farming communities supplying the daily needs of the country, or the terrific Clydeside holiday resorts and exhilarating Clyde Firth sailings "doon the watter." Glasgow City itself boasts more green parks than any other city in the U.K. and has much in the way of culture to satisfy any tourist.

To find out more about the towns in the regions the search facility is accessed through the council areas to the left of the domain map. Enjoy your browse through the site and if anyone has any comments or photos to enhance these pages please feel free to contact us.
