Burghead
that little fishing village, which, on first appearance looks just like
any other fishing village, but, hidden beneath that peaceful facade
lies a history, a very bloody history. The place was home to, and haven
for, that breed of men who struck panic into the hearts and minds of
the population of this coastline for many a long year. If you think
of big men with ruddy complexions, chain mail, horned helmets, swords
and huge battleaxes, of course you know I'm talking of the Vikings.
This was their stronghold on the Moray coast,
and from here they penetrated into the heartland raiding and pillaging
as was their want. At least that's what the legends would have us believe.

Certainly around
Macbeth's time they did cause havoc from
time to time and not a few battles were fought in the region. Each year
in the town a fire festival is held in the tradition of old and this
attracts many sightseers from all parts who enjoy the spectacle immensely.
Burghead still operates a small fishing fleet, although not of
the size of yesteryear. A visit to the harbour is enjoyable especially
if you can get into conversation with some fisherman for some scary
stories can be told of exploits on the waters by these brave men.
