Buckie is
a major fishing port on the Moray Firth Coast and also a very attractive
holiday spot. Allied to that are the fish processing plants, net manufacturing,
boatbuilding and repair yards which underpin the local economy along
with the surrounding farming and together they make for a busy town.
With Buckpool
just next door and both places having good beaches, this is a popular
holiday resort as well and in the summer months the town throngs with
the many visitors attracted to the area.
A museum called
'The Buckie Drifter' is dedicated to the herring fishing Industry
and visiting a place like this makes one aware of just how resilient
and brave these fisherfolk were and still are. To watch the boats coming
and going from the harbour, rising and falling in the swell, which hits
the craft at the harbour mouth is a sight to see. Even with the most
modern boats this is still a very dangerous occupation and many a story
can be told to the visitor by the fishermen of these parts.
