Brae

Harbour

Brae is situated in the area known as Northern Mainland and owes much of its present day size to the oil terminal at nearby Sullom Voe for it was extended to house some of the workforce from this enterprise. The village has spread itself to the point of being one of the most populated communities on the island.
Needless to say there is much activity to be had in the area in the form of recreation which modern localities demand and added to the historical environment in the surrounding district there is much for the visitor to do and see.

With river, loch and sea close by, the needs of the fishing fraternity are well served with some fine catches to be had.
The wildlife enthusiasts are also well catered for, in that this area has a variable abundance of creatures to spot.

Cycling is another favourite mode of seeing the area and there are cycle renting facilities.

To the west of the area lies a peninsula where the old fishing village of Hillswick rests and a little further on the very interesting museum and lighthouse of Tangwick Haa.
