Auldearn is a small village on the Inverness road about two miles east of Nairn. It's farming country around the village which, in olden times I believe, was a coaching stopover for travellers.
The old church is particularly of interest as a great battle was fought in the vicinity between the Covenanters and the Royalist Earl of Montrose. It is said that some of the dead from this battle are buried in the church graveyard.

Along the road there is a seventeenth century dovecoat which stands on the site of an earlier royal castle which would have been one of a chain of fortifications from Dingwall to the west of Inverness all the way through to Fochabers east of Elgin. These were built to protect ancient Moray from the Viking incursions which persisted all along this coast. From the dovecoat one has a clear view of the area where the battle of Auldearn was fought.
Today Auldearn is a quiet and peaceful village but most welcoming to visitors.
