Alford owes its existence apparently to the Great North Scotland Railway Company that set up the town as a terminal way back in 1859. However don't let that put you off the place for it really is well worth a visit, for, surrounding the town are many wonderful other places to see.

The place is typical of the Grampian towns and villages which on the whole are not too large and not too small but pretty with it. Add on the wonderful countryside all around plus the historical sites, parks, wildlife, walks, fishing, golf and castles and there is enough to keep anyone pleased.

On the main street there is a fine little museum dedicated to the transport of ages past which should interest young and old alike. The Alford Valley Steam Railway which runs to Murray Park is stationed close by and this is a must for the steam enthusiast.

Alford was the site of a battle during the Covenanting Wars at which Montrose, who didn't seem to care which side he fought with, for he changed allegiance twice in his eventful career, beat the Covenanters. There are some notable castles such as Craigievar to the south, Kildrummy to the west and Corgarff to the southwest of Alford all a must to see for they have great stories to tell.

This is great country for exploring and there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy.
